Avatar: The Last Airbender Cast of Characters

There are so many names and faces in Avatar: The Last Airbender that it’s hard to keep them straight! Here are a few of the most important Avatar The Last Airbender characters in the series, and which episode they first appeared in:

Aang is the main hero of our story. He’s the Avatar, and the last airbender, all in one 12 year-old boy! His adventures while he tries to save the world from the Fire Lord are what inspire all of his friends and the people he meets along the way. He first appears in Avatar Book 1 Chapter 1 of the Avatar books.

More about:

Appa is Aang’s faithful steed, a flying water buffalo. While he doesn’t speak, he’s shown himself in the past to be quite smart for an animal. Appa first appears in Avatar Book 1 Chapter 1.

Azula is Zuko’s sister, and the apple of the Fire Lord’s eye. She’s an amazing fire-bender, but she’s also more than a little crazy. She doesn’t hesitate at all at the thought of harming her brother or her uncle if that’s what her father wants her to do. When she’s given the task of capturing the Avatar, she asks her friends to help and starts spreading trouble on her way to get to him. She first appears in Avatar Book 1 Water, Chapter 12, but only for a moment in a flashback. Her first real appearance is in Book 1, Chapter 20.

Iroh is Fire Lord Ozai’s older brother, and Prince Zuko and Princess Azula’s uncle. He’s a general in the armies of the Fire Nation, and was considered in line to be the Fire Lord himself! But after his own son died in a siege on an Earth Nation city, he was set aside in favor of his younger brother. Iroh is a great tactician, and a master fire-bender. He guides and teaches his nephew as much as he can. His first appearance is in Avatar Book 1 Chapter 1.

Katara is Aang’s friend and his water-bending teacher. She travels with him throughout the world, working to right wrongs and stop the Fire Nation from taking over. She’s also Aang’s love interest, even if she doesn’t see it right away! Her skills help her heal and protect the people around her. Katara first appears in Avatar Book 1 Chapter 1.

More about:

Momo is the Avatar’s guide, a flying lemur. Much like Avatar Aang, he’s the last of his race left in the world after the Fire Nation destroyed all the others. He’s intelligent, but he doesn’t speak. Momo is found by Aang and his friends in the Southern Air Temple in Avatar Book 1 Chapter 3.

Roku is the Avatar immediately before Aang. He was a fire-bender first when he was alive, though he’s a spirit when he interacts with his reincarnation, Avatar Aang. He has a red dragon as a guide, much the way Aang has Momo. He first appears in Avatar Book 1 Chapter 3.

Suki is an earth-bender, one of the young women who make up the Kyoshi Warriors. She tries to capture Avatar Aang when she first meets him, and even manages to keep him for a while! But later she lets them go and eventually forms a close friendship with Sokka. Later in the series, she helps save Sokka and his father from a Fire Nation prison, proving she’s a true friend as well. She first appears in Avatar Airbender Book 1, Chapter 4.

Sokka is another character of Avatar The Last Airbender characters and one of Aang’s friends, and Katara’s brother too. He’s a warrior of the Southern Water Tribe, good with tactics and weapons both. He wants very much to prove that he’s just as strong a warrior as his father. His travels with Aang are just the thing to help him improve and grow until he’s even stronger than he expects. Sokka first appears in Avatar Book 1 Chapter 1.

More about:

Toph is one of Aang’s friends and companions. She’s also called The Blind Bandit when she first meets the group. Once she agrees to travel with them, she becomes Aang’s earth-bending teacher. One of Toph’s best qualities is that she’s stubborn like the earth itself. She never lets her blindness get in the way of getting what she wants in life. Toph first appears in Avatar Book 2, Chapter 6.

Zuko is Fire Lord Ozai’s only son. He’s Aang’s main enemy for most of the series, and is always trying to find and capture the Avatar. He has a scar from a fireblast along his eye, given to him by his father before he was exiled from the Fire Nation. Not only does Zuko know how to fire-bend, he’s also a master swordsman and very good at sneaking around. He appears for the first time in Airbender Book 1 Chapter 1.
